Duncan Ferguson has paid tribute to one of his predecessors in the Everton Number 9 shirt – Dave Hickson, who passed away on Monday at the age of 83.
“Dave was a lovely man and it’s very, very sad that he’s no longer with us,” said Duncan.
“I used to see him all the time at Goodison and he was one of those people who always had a smile on his face. He just loved Everton and he loved coming to the game.”
Dave Hickson netted 111 goals in 243 Everton appearances over two spells (only five men have scored more for the club) and Duncan acknowledged his contribution to the cause.
“He must have been some player,” he said. “To score all those goals takes some doing. I’d have loved to have played alongside him. Me and him would have given the defenders something to think about that’s for sure!
“They tell me he was as brave as a lion on the field and he gave everything he had every time he crossed the white line. And that’s why the Evertonians worshipped him.
“It’s awful to think we won’t see him at Goodison again and my thoughts are with his family. God Bless you Dave.”
