Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining
In the not too distant past, many inside football (including within the club itself) voiced concerns about the prospect of such a prolific goal-scorer leaving; but now, as we get ready to face Lukaku in the red shirt of Manchester United, the positive picture he leaves behind in terms of our attacking options is a joy to behold.
In Sandro, we have a genuinely exciting prospect, with a ceiling potentially even higher than Lukaku’s; and who knows, he may also emulate the impact made by Torres when he signed for the dark side all those years ago. Meanwhile, the signings of Klassen and Rooney are also positive, albeit, for different reasons. Klassen, by all accounts, will bring more productivity (a word often used by Koeman), while Rooney has a great opportunity to end his career in style.
Of course, the latter provokes sentimental feelings, despite the pain inflicted when he left for United so early on in his career. Nonetheless, the truth is, he couldn’t see us winning anything (where no doubt, the chance to earn more money was also a factor!), and as much as I hate to say it, he was right. But now, things are different, as he joins a club in a much stronger position; while any contribution Rooney can make to another successful season of progress, will be a special moment for all concerned.
He also joins a squad brimming with talent e.g. Lookman, Bolasie, Dowell, Mirallas, Davies … and I haven’t even mentioned the prospect of Sigurdsson, or the players already making an impact for the Under-23’s. Incidentally, my own projection for the most exciting, largely home-grown combination up front would be Sandro, with Davies in behind, and Dowell and Lookman either side – although realistically, we probably won’t line-up this way against Stoke, then again, it just goes to show how strong the squad is looking.
