The Everton Heebie Jeebies
From the bilious way that my brain is still trying to come to terms with the first three episodes of our season thus far, down to the pit of my considerable gut still sickened by our notoriously stoic defense being weaker by the game. Fellow Bluenoses I am calling out to you all to make some sense of it all for me! Pleeease!
I hate to apportion blame upon certain players, I truly do, especially when a player has shown the aptitude, the split-second heroism and composure that our dear Captain Jags has. But has he not been the loose pin in the grenade? Loosened i’m sorry to add by a World Cup hangover which we and the world witnessed together. A monumental cock-up – A defensive joke, and well, a knackered goalkeeper to suit?
And when I say goalkeeper I do not refer to Englands number 1, rather ‘our’ number 1. And how can an American hero who saved more shots than in any game ever be making such schoolboy errors for us now?
I don’t care if an opposition striker is offside (and uncalled) by even eighty yards, a goalkeeper should never leave his line by a good ten yards and then let a ball through his legs. And then complain about it!
Our much loved Silvain Distin wasn’t selected for French duty, he had a full break as far as I’m aware. So do highly paid premier league players rust? Forget that instilled station? Can a lifetimes worth of training and development at the highest level suddenly leave a player?
You see, I am trying desperately to make sense of it all. Can it be that our super fit, highly trained defense are really feeling match lag already? Is the squeeze of too many games for the individual now taking its toll at the most inappropriate time or is that old bastard, age, that is now ominously sullying every brilliant attack we muster? Then what of our much deserved, massively busier season to come? How on earth can we super-impose ourselves on the top four/five whilst delivering reverberating panic upon the teams to match us in the Europa Cup?
For once our goal scoring capability is not a worry and Bobby has seen to this brilliantly in this, his second really successful transfer window. Given the full defensive encouragement that our players have provided in the past we have a world class team that can hopefully lift that European cup. Qualify for Champion League kudos and even set itself amongst the top four. It seems more plausible than breaking into the top four.
We fans support a stupidly engorging sport. Self-important, morally destructive and getting more deluded and pompous by the season. It is Everton who places technical ambition, clever financial dealing and a history which enshrouds the rest of the league in disbelief for its ever presence in a place of billionaire backers and pure disrespect of individual hopes and dreams. …Long should this continue!
But see, I’m ranting now and as an eternal optimist it leaves a very bad taste in my chomper.
I cannot and will not settle in mind that just because other teams pay £100 million for incumbent players each season automatically defines a season of success. What of family? What of support? What of pure, unbridled local talent? What of the man on the street who works a 45 hour week for £1000 and then still supports his beloved football team or pre-orders a shirt which adorns the namesake of their favorite player. A shirt lets face it, that is never cotton and makes most of us stink after a few hours of wearing it! Weather we win, draw or lose. But we endure this as fans to see our beloved team perform with the hope of glory and support its ethos.
Big Vic to come back to haunt us?
I’m hoping in some glorified way that someone from the club reads this and realises that we ‘do’ have the prospectus for greatness once again but we need to mix it up. So lets either get our youngsters out his season, Browning, Stones, Henen, Galloway, Duffy (oh no we sold him apparently) or ask Dynamo the Magician to Finch Farm and hopefully see some of his mojo rub-off. A media coup or a bloody desperate act?
Heres to a 2-2 result with West Brom where Victor is bound to resurface with a two fingered salute.
Lets hope not Evertonians, lets hope not eh?
