Everton launch £13.5m bid for James McCarthy

Everton are hoping to close in on Wigan’s James McCarthy after launching a final £13.5m bid for the midfielder yesterday evening according to the Daily Star

James McCarthy could be heading to Everton

Manager Roberto Martinez wants the Republic of Ireland international to join him and former teammates Arouna Kone and Antolin Alcaraz at Goodison Park.

Everton have already had a bid of £12m rejected for the former Hamilton Academical midfielder.

And Martinez, who brought McCarthy to the Premier League from the SPL in 2009, believes a deal for the 22-year-old is close.

    New manager Roberto Martinez

New Wigan boss Owen Coyle slapped a £20m price on his shoulders in the hope of preventing a further bid, however it looks likely a deal will be struck for much less.

Martinez is hoping to conclude a deal in next week as he begins to shape his first team squad for the new season.

Everton are also looking at Blackpools £8m midfielder Tom Ince as Martinez continues to rebuild the Everton squad

    2. i dont now where these papers get this stuff from historically we dont pay that sort of money.
Also wigan are being used by the papers like we are with manure because they speculate.
This is to wigan what the baines/fellainni stuff is to us just some lazy sports correspondent trying to put 2&3 together and making 4

      • I tend to agree, g lloyd. It appears that the only thing to fill column inches these days is speculation (and poor speculation at that). It’s a pity it cannot run as a strip cartoon series with ‘aghast’ expressions from all and sundry.

    3. Sounds to me like a pie in the sky Daily Star comic strip story. Its obvious Martinez rates this guy but for that money? I am not sure I would be bidding more than maybe 9 million tops. I have seen him play, he is a fairly good player but for the price being quoted I would maybe want a player who is going to make a world of difference. Is that McCarthy? I am not so sure. It would seem like signing him is a replacement for Fellaini but he is not as good as Fella who has more to his game than McCarthy. I would like McCarthy but not for that fee and not at the expense of losing Fellaini.

    4. Sorry Everton is a step back for James McCarthy?? Are you for real? I mean this is James McCarthy we are talking about yes? Not Andres Iniesta or Neymar? Dont get me wrong the lad is a decent all action player but hang on a minute, he aint that good. I personally wouldnt pay anywhere near that money for him and I doubt Spurs will either, a club who already have about 100 midfielders already, cant see them going after another. McCarthy would be grateful to mive to Everton and he should be flattered to be linked with us.
