Everton ready to swoop for Defoe?
Jermain Defoe looks to be on his way out of Spurs and a move to Toronto FC in the MLS looks on the cards, but Toronto FC manager Ryan Nelson says that a deal could be hi-jacked by a team in the “top four “ of the Premier League suggesting that Everton could be in the running for the England striker.
Roberto Martinez is known to be keen to add support for Romelu Lukaku and with Nikica Jelavic seemingly on his way out of Goodison Park, Arouna Kone injured for the season and Apostolos Vellios not looking to be in his plans, the toffee’s chief could move for the diminutive striker.
The article in The Express also suggests that Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea could also be involved and whether Spurs would sell to any of these is debatable.
If Defoe is sold to Toronto, QPR boss Harry Redknapp has already indicated that he would want Jermain on loan and would offer Spurs first refusal on hitman Loic Remy, which could have implications on any Nikica Jelavic move as QPR were a team that fancied the big Croatian.
Would Defoe be a good signing for Everton? Have your say at www.theevertonforum.com
OOPS!
This story is very poorly timed.
Defoe has already been confirmed as a completing a Toronto FC deal.
Spurs have also arranged a friendly with Toronto during their 2014 pre-season tour; playing Toronto on 23rd July 2014 between games against the Seattle Sounders and Chicago Fire.
THFC have also completed a rights deal with Toronto, meaning that Toronto FC can sell official THFC merchandise and that they will support the Canadian THFC official supporters club.
You ITK is a little bit of guess work and now completely out of date!!!
Not really mate. Spurs announced it about 10 mins after the story was published. There is no ITK, you will see it was from a story in the Express following an interview with Ryan Nelson who said that Top 4 teams had enquired
True, but it was fairly clear, well I thought so at least that Ryan Nelson was basically covering himself in case something extremely unexpected happened.
Sky Sports said at 06:26AM
“Toronto head coach Ryan Nelsen claims Tottenham have had rival offers for Jermain Defoe from English Champions League clubs.
However, Sky Sports News understands that the England international striker will still fly to Canada to complete the move on Sunday before he is paraded by the club on Monday.”
I know you can only report what is out there. But usually when a presentation to the club is expected to happen in 4 days time, then it is unlikely that the deal is going to be high-jacked, not impossible, just unlikely.
And with so many sources reporting salary offers of £90k per week for Defoe, can you really see Everton paying this, or more to steal him away?
Again, I would say Everton or any other premier league “big guns” high-jacking what has seemed like a done deal is extremely unlikely.
If it was me, I would have read the signs, and either posted extremely early, or held fire until the first business announcements of the day had really been released.
Also when the Express starts trying to link Defoe with Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea…. They really do seem like they are grasping at straws.
Each to their, own and your opinions are fair and valid. I just personally thought that this article was poorly timed, becoming redundant and out of date less than 10 minutes after being posted.
We aren’t saying that we get every story correct mate. We simply get all the transfer rumours associated with Everton and post them in one place. I think it was fairly obvious that Defoe would join Toronto, but at the same time it was obvious that Fer would join Everton last year and Fernandes would have joined us years ago after talks and agreements were in place, for them to get gazumped.
If it had been any paper other than the Express I would have thought it possible. I don’t even believe the date on that rag.
haha, they are awful. They put out that many stories about the blues that surely one of them that we post will be true!!!!
I’m delighted we’re not getting him, he’s a vastly over-rated lazy joke of a striker.
Nonsense article solely to create Internet traffic to the site.
Not really mate. Did you not read the Nelson comments?
