Gibson: It’s the best I have felt for 18 months
Everton midfielder Darron Gibson has said that he is delighted to be back and fit again following his cameo in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday.
The Republic of Ireland international has said that he feels the best he has done for 18 months and is now targeting more game time now that he is back to full fitness.
“On a personal note, it was good to be back involved and make an impact on the game. I was happy with the way I performed, but the result was obviously disappointing.
“The gaffer wanted me to play the ball forward and create a few chances, which I think we did when I came on. Obviously, it makes things easier for me with the likes of Christian [Atsu] and Aaron [Lennon] making the runs for me.
“It was difficult because they were playing five at the back and four in midfield, but we’ve worked on it all week because we knew what they were coming here with.
“I think we’ve got enough experience in the dressing room that when we go 1-0 up, we should be killing games off so, in that respect, it was a bit disappointing.”
“It’s been frustrating because I had a good pre-season, but maybe it wasn’t right and I wasn’t fit enough when I came back in at the start of the season,” he added.
“Mentally, it was frustrating for me but I’ve worked hard and hopefully now that’s me back to my best.
“It’s the best I’ve felt in the last 18 months, so fingers crossed [it can continue] and it’s good to be back.
“I want to play as many games as I can, every time I set a target or goal, I end up breaking down again so I’m just going to try and stay on the pitch for as long as I can.”
