Everton have said that Darron Gibson could be out for the season, but that Everton manager Roberto Martinez hopes to have him again this season.
Martinez confirmed at his press conference on Thursday morning that the midfielder has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
Gibbo will have surgery on his injured knee but luckily there was no other damage. The midfielder faces a lengthy period of rehabilitation and won’t play again this year.
An Everton statement read: “The length of time the 25-year-old will be missing will be best determined once the surgery is completed.
“However, the scans did confirm to Everton’s medical team that no additional damage was sustained to the structure of the right knee, ensuring all treatment and rehabilitation will be focused on repairing the damaged ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).”
Gibson hadn’t featured under Martinez this season, except for in the league cup defeat to Fulham and as a substitute in the Premier League against Manchester City which boosted an international recall following the termination of Giovani Trapattoni’s Irish contract.
