We spoke to fans of Yeovil Town and Colchester United to see how our loan players are getting on. The first of this three part article focuses on Shane Duffy, who has been at Yeovil since late September, and now has extended his stay until the end of the season. So far he has been a key member of the Glovers’ squad, making 14 appearances. Our Yeovil fan who we thank for corresponding with us was Chris Sweet (@Sweeter1984) who is the Sports editor of the Western Gazette.

1. How has he got on in general since his move?
He’s been nothing short of a revelation and along with central defensive partner Byron Webster a clear candidate for player of the season so far. He’s one of the first names on the team sheet and even though his replacements have been experienced Yeovil have looked at their most solid with him in the team. He’s certainly had plenty to do in a tough season for the Glovers, but has risen to the challenge.
2. Has he progressed in his short time?
Definitely. When he arrived he took just a few minutes to show to fans Gary Johnson had signed a tough tackling defender. But as time has progressed and he has gained more game time he has not only proved his undoubted class but also matured into a genuine leader.
3. What are his better attributes?
Shane Duffy’s a strong tackler, dominant in the air and doesn’t mess around with clearances. He reads the play well, doesn’t seem to be overawed by illustrious opposition and is a good organiser.
4. Where does he need to improve?
It’s important to note I’m nit-picking here, such has been Duffy’s impact. He’s only looked below par twice and on both occasions Yeovil as a team have been poor. Against Middlesbrough he played as the left-sided centre half and didn’t look too comfortable, but experience has changed that. His consistency – like any player of his age – will be tested when he makes the step up. I also understand he is getting a bit of lighthearted stick from his team-mates for not scoring yet!
5. Do you think he could make the step up to the Premier League in the future (short or long term)?
He will make the step up in the short term, no doubt about it. He has been tremendous in the Championship and I believe he could perform in the top flight now, such is his clear talent. However, more games with the Glovers will benefit all parties and ease his step up to the top level.
