James McCarthy was impressed by the debut of on-loan Manchester City player Gareth Barry and hopes to learn from the midfielder.
He said: “He is brilliant. He got about, chased Chelsea down and never stopped harassing them. It will be a huge boost for me to play alongside him.
“He always wanted the ball and was looking to play passes all the time. Even his clearance was outstanding.
“I’ve only trained with him a few times but already he’s been talking to me a lot, and he’s a joy to work with. Obviously I’ll learn a lot from training with Gareth. He’s a great addition.”
McCarthy, who made his Blues bow as a 66th-minute substitute, was thrilled to have been involved in his new club’s first Premier League win of the season.
“It felt like a massive achievement to make my debut at a club like Everton,” he said. “The gaffer said I’d get a chance and I enjoyed it even if it was a difficult game. I’m just glad we got the points.
“It was a hard game to come on in. It was just about seeing it out at the end. It’s always harder going on during the game, especially when the opposition are pushing on. The atmosphere was different class. As a kid you dream about playing in front of big crowds at places like this. The fans got right behind the team and they were brilliant.”
Another of the Toffees deadline day acquisitions, Romelu Lukaku, was paraded on the pitch at half-time but was unable to play against his parent club Chelsea.
However McCarthy admits he is already hugely impressed by the Belgium international, and with his likely impact he sees no reason why Everton should not dream of European football next term.
“Romelu is great,” he said.
“We’ve seen what he’s got in training and it’s amazing. On Friday we were doing shooting practise and he banged in six out of seven. It just shows you how strong our squad is. I think he’ll be massive for us.
“We just need to push as far as we can go. We took Chelsea right to the wire and got a great result. No teams are going to like coming to Goodison and we can get points away too. There’s no reason why we can’t target Europe.”
