Lukaku: Without preseason last year I wasn’t ready for the league
Everton striker Romelu Lukaku is fit and raring to go this season after saying that he wasn’t fit for last season after missing pre-season due to the World Cup in Brazil.
Lukaku scored 2 goals in a 0-3 win against Southampton at the Saint Marys stadium and looked very impressive, bullying the Southampton defence and Lukaku says it was down to the hard work over the summer.
“That is in my top three performances since I joined Everton,” Lukaku said.
“I felt strong on Saturday, I scored two and was in the build-up for the other one and I was good at running in behind the defence and holding the ball up. So that performance was definitely in my top three.
“I’ve started well compared to last season.
“Without any pre-season I wasn’t ready for the league and it took me six months to get to my level but now I am fit so there is no excuse to perform like I did last year.”
“I trained when I was in America and Belgium as well.
“I really wanted to start the season fit so when I came back I wasn’t overweight, I had more muscles and in the physical tests I was very good so knew a good season was coming.
“I’d do two or three hours a day. I was over there with Memphis Depay and he introduced me to someone over there.”
Speaking of the match, Lukaku was impressed more by the battlers in midfield.
“Gareth Barry and James McCarthy were brilliant, they never lost any challenges,” he said.
“Me and Arouna (Kone) tried to make a difference but did what we had to do.”
How many will Lukaku score in the league this season?
