Martinez: Gareth Barry will sign a contract for footballing reasons
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has said that his on-loan midfield star should go to the World Cup with England because his level of performance has been “phenomenal” this season after building a strong partnership with James McCarthy.
The Spaniard also said that Barry’s next contract will be football focussed rather than money orientated as he says that the player is after seeing out his career at somewhere he enjoys.
“I would take him. He has been so consistent throughout the season and his level of performance has been phenomenal.
“What surprised me more than anything was how he developed a new partnership with James McCarthy. I’ve been so impressed with that.”
Martinez went on to talk about Barry’s next contract and how he would love the player to commit to Everton.
Martinez added: “It’s not about finding a good contract or financial package, it’s more about the next footballing chapter and where he can enjoy it next.”
