Roberto Martinez says Darron Gibson offers the Everton side something ‘unique’.
The midfielder has not played for the Blues this season after suffering a knee problem against Real Betis in the final pre-season friendly of the summer.
But he is close to a return and could be in the squad for this weekend’s game at West Ham.
And Martinez explained to evertontv: “Darron is quite unique in his role. With his forward passing and ability on the ball, he is someone that is very much needed in any team.
“He wants to control games and we are delighted that Darron’s knee is a lot better and he is fully fit.”
Martinez has a wealth of options in central midfield following the arrival of Gareth Barry and James McCarthy but he is fully aware that all his resources will be required as Everton prepare for three games in quick succession.
He continued: “Now for Darron it is a matter of getting the match fitness, but we have got such a demanding week ahead, with the three games that we have, it is going to be vital that everyone is ready and available.
“Clearly, Darron in midfield gives us something important for our side.”
