Martinez: Loans are crucial for clubs with finances like ours

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has said that his side will continue to utilise the loan market and says for a club with finances like Evertons the loan market is crucial.

Martinez brought Gareth Barry, Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu and Lacina Traore on loan deals to the club and mixed them into a side with established Everton stars and it has worked relatively well on the whole and Martinez says he will continue this trend next season.

Martinez said, “When you bring a player on loan you never have the worry of whether you can keep them long-term.

“The loan system allows you to keep bringing in players who can make an impact in the short term and bridge those gaps. For clubs with finances like ours that is vital.”

    1. On balance they have benefited us this year.We were unluckyish to lose Gerard and Romelu to injury, but generally they have given us that little edge.Gareth was maybe as important as any and could yet finish his career with us as a result of this year. Traore though is another matter. Already injured and not having played for his parent club since signing from Russia, was there an ulterior motive for them letting him come to us. Now it appears that we are stuck paying a lump of his salary.Scant reward for a freakish backheel, isn’t it? As a taster, like Jo or Arteta or Drenthe they obviously work.As a feeder club for other teams,I’m not so sure. The danger is that we get stuck with an unhappy chappie or someone struggling for experience or form, while our kids, who could be worth a try,are left playing hoofball in the lower leagues,or languishing on the bench. I’d be a lot more receptive of this approach if we seemed to be in charge of our own nearly men.Why not play Duffy and leave Alkaras at Wigan? Why not sell Vellios,or Magaye if they are never going to make the full side.Hows about giving some of our kids a go, now we are only playing for pride.McAleny,Grant et al could just need that chance to make the jump, couldn’t they? Under David Moyes we let loads of potential go and I frequently hear or see their names as quality players in the Championship or lower leagues.Today Jose Baxter has excelled.Usually it is Vaughny,or Ruddy,or Beckford.I reckon most real football lovers would be happy to see us playing classy football with home grown talent, with passion and love of the club as a guiding force, vis Ossie and Hibbo, instead of youngsters, however good, constantly reminding us that they are mere journeymen.
