Roberto Martinez has been sacked as Everton manager.
Speculation has been mounting in recent months after Everton’s form dipped dramatically as the club have recorded their worst home league form in a single season in their entire history. Pressure had been mounting as fans began to stage protests at Goodison Park and also at away matches. Season tickets, for next season, were also speculated to have suffered a decline in sales by several thousand from last season.
This ends Martinez’ 3 year tenure at Everton which began with the promise of Champions League football but which ended with Championship football looking more likely. Everton recorded their highest Premier League points total of 72 in Martinez’ first season but 2 seasons of continued mediocrity with no sign of improvement have lead to his departure.
New major shareholder Farhad Moshiri is expected to be heavily involved in the search for a new manager as he is also widely expected to pump money to improve the team during the Summer.
John Stones and Romelu Lukaku have continued to be linked away from the club and with a number of squad players expected to leave in the Summer there will be a large rebuilding job for whoever takes over.
Speculation has already begun as to who the next manager will be with many candidates including Manuel Pelligrini, Frank De Boer, Ronald Koeman, Mark Hughes, David Moyes and Jose Mourinho being linked to the Goodison Park hotseat.
David Unsworth may take charge of Evertons final home game of the season at home to Norwich at the weekend with 11th being the highest the club can finish in the Premier League.
Who do you think will take over at Goodison Park now?
