Martinez: We want to sign a new striker
Everton manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed that a striker is now his top priority in the January transfer window. With Nikica Jelavic on the verge of joining Steve Bruce’s Hull City, Martinez has said he wants a striker despite Aiden McGeady providing a more attacking option upfront.
Currently Martinez only has two recognised strikers fit in Romelu Lukaku and Apostolos Vellios, but can also call on McGeady, Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith if needed and the boss recognises the need to find the right person.
He told evertonfc.com: “What is important is that Aiden McGeady arriving has given us a bit more strength in the wide areas and there are many flexible players who can fill in to that number nine position.
“But it (attack) would be an area that we are looking at before the window closes. We are looking at the options to see if there is a player with the right profile who would fit into the squad.”
Martinez also confirmed that it was Jelavic that wanted to play more games and move away from Goodison Park.
He added: “We agreed the deal and it was down to Nikica to make his decision. I do believe when I spoke to Niki that he was clear that he wanted to join Hull. He felt he would get the opportunity to play the games he needs ahead of the World Cup so, in my eyes, I think the deal is going to happen, even though it is not sealed and signed at the moment.”
