Martinez will do everything he can to win the FA Cup at Everton
Everton fans will be delighted to hear that Roberto Martinez doesn’t echo the same feelings about the FA cup as Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert. Lambert faced the wrath of the Villa fans by claiming that the FA Cup isn’t important to them and claims that clubs could do without the FA cup and concentrate on the league.
Roberto Martinez has a different mind-set and sees the value in the FA cup aswell as the league and is determined to do well after winning the competition with Wigan Athletic last term.
Asked whether he would choose Cup success or a top 5 finish Martinez said: “I don’t think you can choose,” Martinez said when asked whether he would rather see Everton win the FA Cup or secure a top-five position.
“It’s like asking if you prefer your mum or dad. It’s such a difficult question because you want both.
“Whilst we are in the FA Cup we are going to give everything we have got. We are going to be ourselves and cope with any sort of challenge that comes our way.
“In the league so far we have been very good and we want to be even better in the second half of the season. We have a focus to finish the season as strong as we can.”
Everton don’t have a massive squad, but the boss feels that every player is important as injuries and suspensions clock up.
He said: “We will have played five games in 14 days so you need to expect that the squad is stretched. The squad needs to be ready to share the demands
“Whichever team you put out, it’s not weaker. Every player that you put out is a trusted member. We have a group of 21 or 22 players and I feel every one is ready to represent Everton.
“What I have seen over the years is that having a good cup run is always positive. It brings competition for places and allows people in the squad to show important roles.”
Everton fans clearly still love the FA cup, but would you prefer a top 4 finish or silverware? If you are an Aston Villa fan, what did you make of the Lambert comments? Have your say at www.theevertonforum.com
You boys are soo lucky to have a top notch manager and a Chairman that gives a shite.
Winning a trophy is more important to fans than a top 4 finish. It certainly is to most Everton fans that I know. Arsenal have qualified for the Champions League every year under Wenger but so what? They haven’t won a trophy for years.
