Tony Cottee believes Everton’s most important piece of business on transfer deadline day was keeping Leighton Baines.
Manchester United were keen on bringing the left-back to Old Trafford but the Toffees resisted an number of improved bids as the window slammed shut.
Roberto Martinez’s side brought Romelu Lukaku, James McCarthy and Gareth Barry to Goodison Park as the Spaniard looks to stamp his mark on the Merseyside squad.
But Cottee claims hanging on to England star Baines was better than any of the signings they made.
“Everton brought three new players in but, almost more importantly, they’ve held on to Leighton Baines,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show.
“To keep him at the club is fantastic. He’s a wonderful player, he’s pushing Ashley Cole very close to be England’s starting left-back, and might even be in front him at the moment. They’ve done well to keep him at the club.”
Are you impressed by keeping hold of Baines? Have your say at www.theevertonforum.com
ashley cole only starts because he plays for chelsea and his experience..Baines is at least twice the player, cole was good a couple of years ago.Baines is class..
I’m made up with the new signings we got, BUT! Most of all keeping Leighton Baines is the best news of all last nights coming and goings as far as I’m concerned, COYB
