Transfer window a massive wake up call to Moshiri’s new era

Evertonians have long had to watch other clubs enviously from afar during transfer window’s.  While other Premier League clubs announce exotically named players on large deals, Everton would often have to barter and borrow to bring in names that they knew would match their ethos and style of play.

For the last thirty odd years we have had to sell one player for big money in order to bring in 3 or 4 more and then rinse and repeat in other transfer windows.

This summer looked to be a new era.  We had a new investor come in who looked to do things in the right way and Evertonians were excited about the prospect of this man making us able to compete.

Farhad Moshiri is the man.  An Iranian billionaire, a man who has instantly fallen in love with this great club of ours.  He has only been at the helm for 6 months, but has already looked to transform everything about the club.

Moshiri has written off the debt, which means that we no longer need to borrow on short term loans at high interest.  He appointed a top football man in Ronald Koeman, on a wage that sent shockwaves through the football world.  He appointed one of the top scouts in the country to take charge of our player recruitment – or at least the scouting of new players and shortly, he will have also overseen the club taking ownership of land on the Mersey docks ready for a new top class stadium.

So in 6 months the Iranian has done an awful lot for the club in a short period of time.

Moshiri is a winner.  A man that will put his heart and soul into what he does to make it succeed.  That is why he is a billionaire.  He rarely talks to the media, but when he does he makes it clear that he wants to make Everton one of the top clubs in England again.

This window has seen one of our “star” players John Stones leave the club for nearly £50m and all the info coming from the press was that Everton would have a £100m warchest available.

We had been linked with players who could easily play in the Champions League and that looks to have been our mistake – Targeting players a little above our station at the moment when we have failed for a couple of years under Roberto Martinez.  Our stock isn’t high enough just yet.

We look to have agreed deals with the clubs (although some look to have gone back on their word), but trying to convince the players to join looks to have been a much bigger task than we appreciated.

I suspect that Moshiri isn’t happy with the way this window has panned out.  We made some very good deals in Ashley Williams, Maarten Stekelenburg, Idrissa Gueye and Yannick Bolasie – But the big signings that Moshiri might have expected haven’t really materialised and questions do need to be asked of our recruitment process.

Have we looked above our station or have the people conducting these deals not done the job befitting of their title?

I don’t know the question to that, but I certainly expect us to come out all guns blazing.

Transfer Window Deadline day SHOULD have been amazing for Everton, but in the end we have ended up with an uninspiring loan deal from one of our premier league rivals in the form of Enner Valencia and the signing of a kid from Sheffield United in the form of Dominic Calvert-Lewis.  Both may prove amazing deals, but they were worlds away from the expectations set from Moshiri I suspect.
