Who makes your Everton – Liverpool XI?
With the impending Merseyside derby this weekend, we want to know who makes your Merseyside XI from the 2 clubs? It’s quite an argued point and some excellent players will be missing, but this is my current Merseyside XI (Although there are a few positions/players that I have swapped and changed a lot!!!)
This is mine (for the next 5 minutes)
Tim Howard
Seamus Coleman Phil Jagielka Daniel Agger Leighton Baines
Steven Gerrard Darron Gibson
Philippe Coutinho Daniel Sturridge
Luis Suarez
Romelu Lukaku
Goalkeeper
Tim Howard
Although Simon Mignolet is a very good keeper, I have gone for Tim Howard who has consistently performed to a high standard over a number of years in the Premier League. I think both teams are quite blessed in the goalkeeping position.
Rightback
Seamus Coleman
Coleman is probably the most improved player for Everton over the last 2 years. Consistently playing well and dangerous in attack and strong in defence.
Centrebacks
Phil Jagielka
Probably the best centreback out of the 2 teams. Jags is a brilliant defender, without being a brilliant footballer technically. He puts himself in the right positions time after time
Daniel Agger
Agger is the player that Everton tracked for a long time and missed out on. Technically the best centre-back out of the 2 teams, Agger has an air of assurance about him. If he wasn’t such a crock he would probably show his worth more.
Went for an 8 year old at primary school haircut
Left Back
Leighton Baines
Baines is arguably the best player on the pitch alongside Luis Suarez. He is the player that can create a cross from nothing and go past a man as if he wasn’t there. He is going through his only bad spell of his time at Everton, but I fully expect him to be up for this match
Midfield
Steven Gerrard
Although most Evertonians hate the starfish, there is no doubting his ability and influence over the years. It pains me to say it, but he is probably the best player to come from Merseyside (Apart from Rooney) over the last 15 years. He is a great player, although his best years are behind him. He probably isn’t as good as many of the other midfielders anymore, but without doubt he will have an influence on the derby. He always ups his game.
Darron Gibson
Liverpool fans will probably criticize me for this one, but unless he plays for you team, you probably don’t the importance of Gibson. He has an array of passing, he can control the midfield and he has a powerful shot. We will miss him loads this season.
Underrated by other fans
Attackers and Forwards
Philipe Coutinho
I picked Coutinho over Ross Barkley, simply due to the fact that he has played more games and been Liverpools best player in a number of these. I have no doubt that Barkley will be in this time in January! Coutinho could go on to be a wonderful player and I very much doubt his start with Liverpool is a flash in the pan. He was a bargain, but it’s yet to be seen how he does in a cold British winter.
Daniel Sturridge
I have shoehorned Sturridge in, simply because he is a goalmonger. He can score and technically is a very good player. Right foot purely for standing!
Luis Suarez
Abomination of a human being, but a wonderful footballer. Extremely talented and a bargain at the price Liverpool paid. Has learnt where the net is and more often than not will finish.
Never quite grew into his teeth
Romelu Lukaku
Beast of a man and he knows where the net is. He is a very good player in the air or on the ground. Very hard to shake off the ball and is often compared to Didier Drogba, which isn’t a bad thing.
