Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has told talkSPORT that Everton’s bid for midfielder James McCarthy was “absolute madness”.
The Republic of Ireland international impressed for Wigan last season, including an outstanding performance in their FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City.
Whelan revealed the Toffees wanted to stagger the payment for the highly-rated 22-year-old over four years, while the Latics chief added that their price was also below the club’s valuation of the winger.
“They haven’t met our valuation, nowhere near it,” Whelan told Kick Off.
“The deal Everton put to us was spread over four years. You just can’t do that in football.
“Twelve or eighteen months, we don’t mind that, but a deal over four years is absolute madness.
“I don’t think we’re going to accept it now, it’s very late in the day and we can’t replace the lad.”
He isn’t a winger he’s a centre mid
